List of radio broadcasters in the United States

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The radio scene in the USA is diverse. Small and very small local stations with just a few watts of ERP exist alongside stations that supply several states. The programs and owners are also very different. In addition to commercial stations, quasi state stations broadcast on reservations of the Native Americans , religious stations broadcast programs and the national public radio has partner stations all over the country.

Transmission frequencies and transmission modes

The radio scene in the USA is characterized by a great diversity of very different stations: transmission power varies just as much as the program content.

In Europe , most broadcasting facilities are operated by specialized firms and telecommunications companies; however, the US broadcasters mostly operate their own transmission systems and are responsible for broadcasting them. The state authority FCC licenses the stations and regulates the terms and conditions of the broadcasts. While medium wave broadcasting in Europe has steadily declined since the end of the Cold War , in the USA it is still part of the radio landscape. Particularly powerful and thus widely audible stations on VHF and medium wave are called “powerhouse stations”.

VHF

Since the 1970s, many VHF stations have emerged, especially in cities. Some stations broadcast their programs both on medium wave and on FM and are licensed for this with their own callsign .

A number of so-called FMLP ( Frequency Modulation - Low Power ) stations transmit with powers of less than 5 watts for a very local environment of usually no more than 10 miles . Many Christian program providers use these licenses.

Medium wave

Medium wave transmission enables large states to be covered with just one transmitter. The medium wave transmitters adapt their output power to the propagation conditions . The wave plan is regulated and coordinated accordingly by the FCC. At night, reduce the transmitter usually their performance greatly to Inter frequencies on the heavily occupied frequency band to avoid. Most of the time, high power is transmitted during the day and significantly reduced power at night. In between, the daily output in the "critical hours", the first two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset, is also sent with reduced daily output (regulated in Section 73.187 of the Federal Communications Commission's Rules).

There are repeated attempts to broadcast stereo signals via medium wave. In 1975 the FCC started a five-year test and operated several AM stereo systems in parallel. After a competition between systems, legal disputes and the increased use of the FM band, AM stereo was initially forgotten. In 1993 the FCC declared Motorola's C-QUAM system the standard.

Local channels

The FCC primarily assigns the frequencies 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450 and 1490 kHz for local medium wave stations with transmitters up to 1 kW. In addition to the power limitation, only non-directional antennas may be used on these local channels .

Regional channels

Stations with transmission powers of up to 20 kW and directional antennas are assigned to the regional stations that serve specific geographic regions. These stations usually use different radiation characteristics and transmit with variable powers.

Clear channel stations

The clear Channel Stations are the powerful US stations with beam powers of 50 kW and sometimes more. Mostly unidirectional antennas are used. In the early days of US radio, these stations could be heard over long distances between sunrise and sunset and had their frequency exclusively. In the early 1980s a number of additional stations were licensed on clear channel frequencies. This led to strict performance restrictions and the use of directional antennas.

HD radio

The IBOC technology is a proprietary, digital radio system , which in addition to DAB has been developed and will be widely used so far only in the US. The IBOC algorithm is mostly referred to as HD radio. In contrast to DAB, HD radio not only works digitally, but is broadcast as a hybrid system at the same time as the analog medium wave and FM signal . However, this increases the frequency requirement and interference from adjacent channels can occur. With the channel spacing of 200 kHz on VHF (in Europe it is 100 kHz), which is common in the USA , these cases are rare.
