Pacifica radio
Pacifica Radio is the oldest non-commercial radio network in the United States . It consists of a group of five independent radio stations known for their progressive focus.
The network is operated by the Pacifica Foundation , based in Berkeley , California . The Pacifica station KPFA is also located there . Pacifica Radio supplies a variety of radio programs to more than 100 affiliates. The most popular productions include the political magazine Democracy Now and Free Speech Radio News (FSRN).
history
Pacifica was founded in 1946 by the pacifist Lewis Hill . Hill was a conscientious objector during World War II . After the war, Hill founded the Pacifica Foundation along with other former draft evaders. The first live broadcast took place in 1949 at KPFA in Berkeley. KPFA is the first “community supported” radio station in the USA.
In 1980 Pacifica began distributing the content of its stations via the Public Radio Satellite System . 1997 helped KFCF Community Radio in Fresno , California to its own access to a satellite channel in the KU band and Pacifica began to broadcast content via satellite (content distribution system).
structure
Pacifica Radio KPFA (Berkeley, CA), KPFK (Los Angeles, CA), KPFT (Houston, TX), WPFW (Washington, DC) and WBAI (New York, NY) staff and listeners largely determine the direction and content of the Pacifica Network. Each station has a "Local Station Board" (LSB) with 24 members. From each of these committees, 12 delegates are elected to the board of the overall network. Two elections are carried out in parallel, with a proportional representation between employees (3 members) and listeners (9 members).
