WBAI (Free Speech Radio) is an American radio broadcaster and part of the Pacifica Radio Network . WBAI is a non-commercial, listener-sponsored station broadcasting in New York on the 99.5 FM frequency. The genre is left, progressive rock. WBAI is home to the popular radio broadcast Pacifica news program Democracy Now - The war and peace report .

history

Comedian George Carlin was the author of a monologue called Filthy Words 'Dirty Words' . This was broadcast by the WBAI on October 30, 1973 and led to a complaint to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Renowned journalist Amy Goodman began her journalistic career with the Pacifica Network network in New York.

The New York Times noted that WBAI would like to refer to itself as "radio for the 99 percent". However, the station with a high standing would only be turned on by 0.1 percent of New York radio listeners. This led to a financial bottleneck in 2013 for the heavily listener-financed station. Summer Reese, Interim CEO of the Pacifica Foundation announced on air that 19 of the 29 employees of WBAI would have to be laid off in order to have the financial basis for the rental of the station on the Empire State Building .
