KOA is an American radio broadcaster from Denver , Colorado . The station is owned by the media company iHeartMedia . KOA supplies Denver- Boulder and Colorado Springs and broadcasts a news and talk format.

history

KOA began broadcasting in 1924. The station belonged to General Electric . Initially with 5 kW, it increased its output to 12.5 kW in 1927. On July 7, 1934, the power was increased to 50 kW, with which it still transmits on the medium wave today . Since then, KOA has been the dominant clear channel station on MW 850 kHz in North America : At night, its signal can be heard in 30 states in the USA, almost all of Canada and Mexico.

From 1981 to 1984 the well-known radio host Alan Berg had his show on KOA. He was signed by KOA in 1981 and made his debut at the station on February 23, 1981. The Alan Berg Show was received as a syndicate broadcast in 30 US states. Berg represented liberal social and political views. Berg was known for annoying his callers until they lost their temper and Berg then cursed them. Berg was murdered on June 18, 1984 by neo-Nazis from the group " The Order " in front of his home in Denver for political reasons.

In the 1990s, KOA-AM became the leading station in the Denver radio market. After the "Telecom Act" of 1996, which from then on allowed several stations to be owned on one market, the former owner Jacor took over the classic rock stations KRFX , KBCO (Addult Alternative), KBPI (Rock) and KHOW 630 (Talk) and KTLK 760 (Talk).

At KOA u. a. the show by Mandy Connell. In 2016 she was ranked 49th among the “Heavy Hundred” talk hosts and is one of the few women in the ranking. Their show is being syndicated across the US.
