history

KGOU was founded as a public radio station in 1983 by resolution of the Direction of the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma . In 1988 the station was spun off to the College of Continuing Education (UO Outreach). The aim was to support lifelong learning through the radio program. Because the station was only licensed for a very weak transmission power, the UO applied for a second license for Oklahoma City in the mid-1980s . The Federal Communications Commission finally gave in 1990 a permit for the construction of Krou, so the stronger transmitter 1993 by Krou went with the joint program on the air.

In 2015 the KGOU contribution “The Complexities of Free Speech on a University Campus” won the CBI National Student Production Award in the Best Audio Podcast category .
