History and naming

WWOZ was founded by the brothers Walter and Jerry Brock from Texas . They believed that New Orleans needed a “ community radio ” and started preparing in the mid-1970s. Herry Brock also co-founded the Louisiana Music Factory and worked as a record producer for local artists. The Nora Blatch Educational Foundation , named after the radio pioneer Nora Blatch , the wife of Lee De Forest , was founded as a non-profit organization and applied for the broadcasting license.

WWOZ stands for The W onderful W izard of O z , with respect to the quote "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" was thus pointed out that the program oversight should not have the DJ.

WWOZ initially broadcast from different locations, including a beer warehouse in New Orleans-Tipitina.

After WWOZ's studio and transmitter were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, WFUV took over the program from New Orleans via webcast at short notice.
