history
The station was licensed in 1979 as WJHU with a 10 watt transmitter. It was a student radio from Johns Hopkins University . The call sign was taken over by a medium wave station active since 1945 . First of all, a freeform format typical for Collegradios was broadcast. In 1985, the transmission power was increased to 25 kW, which from then on enabled the entire Baltimore-Washington corridor to be covered. After the university upgraded its radio to a professional two-hour station, WJHU became NPR's partner for Baltimore.
In 2002 a group of citizens "Your Public Radio Corp" took over the station and changed the callsign to WYPR .
