Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is the public independent broadcaster of the US state Minnesota . MPR produces radio programs and operates a network of 45 radio stations that cover almost every part of Minnesota and parts of the neighboring states. According to its own information, MPR reaches around 900,000 listeners a week. The declared goal is to strengthen the communities in Minnesota and to provide them with an extensive and varied cultural and news program.
history
The Minnesota Public Radio began in 1967 in Collegeville , Minnesota, after it as a separate establishment from the radio station of the St. John's University had dissolved. In 1969 MPR was a founding member of National Public Radio (NPR) in Washington, DC In the same year, MPR established the “Radio Talking Book”, the US-wide first format for the visually impaired and blind people. In 1974 the legendary A Prairie Home Companion program started on KNOW from MPR. Today 486 stations take over the program across the USA .
In the mid-1990s, MPR achieved the status of one of the best nationwide networks in its transmission area: MPR's transmitters cover 98% of the geographical area of Minnesota and also reach seven other US states and several provinces of Canada .
Programs
In addition to the main program “The Current”, the classic channel MPR-Klassik Network and the news program MPR News were added in the 1990s . MPR currently produces three full programs.
MPI employs over 230 people, making it the largest public radio network in Germany. New York Public Radio, the u. a. WNYC is the second largest broadcaster and employs around 110 people in New York.
Awards
Minnesota Public Radio has won more than 875 journalism awards throughout its history, including the prestigious Peabody Award , the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Award, and the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Gold Baton Award.
