history

In 1894, when construction activity for the accommodation of holiday and spa guests had reached its peak, the building was built as a spa house. It was considered a residence for princes and nobles, which was also reflected in the interior design: the marble baths in the suites were set in the floor, the taps were made of pure gold. Concerts and other festivities were held here for the spa guests. The Kurhaus became the cultural center and heart of Friedrichroda.

After the First World War relatively spared the city, tourism recovered. The Kurhaus was also able to participate in this upswing until the Second World War broke out in the region. During the occupation by the US Army on 7./8. In April 1945 the place was shelled by artillery, whereby the dominant Kurhaus in particular was destroyed. Information about explosives stored here prompted a devastating air raid on the building on April 9, 1945, after which the once elegant residence sank to rubble.

The rubble was cleared by 1949. In the course of the FDGB holiday service's search for a nice area for new holiday homes, it was decided to build the first FDGB holiday home in the GDR on the Klosterberg at the former location of the Kurhaus . The 300-bed home was opened on April 10, 1954 under the name “FDGB-Heim Walter Ulbricht” in the presence of Walter Ulbricht .

The political change in 1989 brought the end of the FDGB home: the FDGB holiday service dissolved, the home fell into disrepair, was considerably devastated and was empty until 1995.

In the following years the building was gutted, only the listed facade remained. After complete renovation, the new hotel was able to reopen on December 21, 1997. The building is one of the Friedrichrodaer cultural monuments .

Today it is one of two Thuringian hotels in the Ramada Worldwide hotel chain and has 154 rooms.
