RAMADA Worldwide is an American hotel chain . The brand is part of the Wyndham Worldwide hotel group, which, with around 6,500 hotels and over half a million rooms, is one of the largest hotel groups in the world. With around 880 hotels and around 106,000 rooms, Ramada represents around 14% of the Wyndham Worldwide hotel portfolio. "Ramada" is Spanish , literally means "provided with branches" (from "rama" = branch of a tree) and is a name for a shady resting place on the edge of the path .

history

In 1954 a group of investors opened a motel in Flagstaff , Arizona (USA) and five years later, in 1959, they named themselves "Ramada" and sold their first franchise license.

In 1963, Ramada operated 40 hotels and opened the first hotel outside the United States in Québec , Canada in 1971 and the first European hotel in Brussels , Belgium in 1973 . The number of hotels rises to 500. In 1981, Ramada opened the first “Ramada Renaissance Hotels” in Denver (USA) and Hamburg (Germany). Two years later, in 1983, the 35 Ramada hotels outside the US were grouped under "Ramada International". This chain became responsible for the Ramada Renaissance Hotels in 1985. Ramada bought Roadways Inns International in 1987 .

In 1989 the company was split into a hotel and a casino company - New World Hotels Holding Ltd Hong Kong bought the Ramada & Renaissance Hotels division. A year later, in 1990, New World sold its US licensing rights to Prime Motor Inn ; Hospitality Franchise Systems ( Cendant Corporation ) a little later these rights from Prime Motor Inns. In 1991 Ramada International operated 110 hotels in 36 countries. A year later, in 1992, New World sold its license rights for Canada to Trans-America Inc . Cendant later bought them. In 1993 “Renaissance Hotels & Resorts” was introduced and Ramada International managed 72 hotels in 40 countries. Finally, in 1996, Marriott International bought New World, so that in 1997 Renaissance Hotels & Resorts became a Marriott brand, with the majority of Ramada hotels renamed "Courtyard by Marriott" and Ramada International's portfolio reduced to 26 hotels worldwide .

In 1999 the Dr. Baumhögger in Germany from Ramada International. Ramada removed "Ramada Garni" from its portfolio. Ramada International introduced Ramada Plaza as an elite product and gave itself a new corporate identity. In 2000, Treff Hotels became a partner for Ramada in Germany and the low-priced Ramada Encore product was launched. A year later, in 2001, Jarvis Hotels partnered with Ramada in the UK . In 2004, Marriott sold Ramada International and all rights to the Ramada name to Cendant, the rights holder for North America. The individual naming rights remained separate. Cendant brought the hotel division to the stock exchange in 2006 as "Wyndham Worldwide"; Wyndham Worldwide gained Corinthia Hotels as a partner for its brands "RAMADA" and " Wyndham Hotels ".

Outside of North America, Ramada is represented by the following brands:

  • RAMADA Plaza (full-service hotels, medium to high price category)
  • RAMADA Hotel (hotels that are preferably located in major cities or business districts)
  • RAMADA Resort (hotels with a focus on vacation and relaxation)
  • RAMADA Encore (hotels for price-conscious customers with functional furnishings)

Ramada in Germany

From 2000 to 2014 the Hospitality Alliance AG Germany (today H-Hotels AG ) from Bad Arolsen was the exclusive partner in Germany and Switzerland for the development of the “RAMADA” brand. In spring 2017, all of the hotels operated by H-Hotels AG were branded under the family-run hotel group's own brands. Today the company operates 60 hotels of its own brands Hyperion, H4 Hotels, H2 Hotels, H + Hotels, H.omes and H.ostels in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

The Ramada Hotels in Germany have also been participating in the Wyndham customer loyalty program since 2007 .
