Historical background
At the beginning of the 19th century, the main sources of income for the town of Friedrichroda and its citizens were forestry , craft , weaving , bleaching and mining . Since 1837 Friedrichroda has developed into one of the most popular and most visited health resorts in all of Thuringia. Friedrich Perthes was the first spa guest in that year and lived in the house at Reinhardsbrunner Straße 13. In the same year, the approximately 12 km long connecting road to Kleinschmalkalden was built, today's L 1024 . The tourism became more and more one of the main sources of income. The first spa guest list drawn up in 1852 had 362 guests. The accommodations, lodgings and boarding houses required with the increase in tourism led to increased construction activity, which changed the appearance of the town considerably. 50 new houses were built between 1860 and 1864. The connection to the Fröttstädt - Reinhardsbrunn railway line took place in 1876, and the Friedrichrodaer train station was built 20 years later. In the meantime, in 1891, construction began on Alexandrinenstrasse, named after Duchess Alexandrine of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , in which most of the former villas and guest houses that still exist today were built until around 1910. The Kurhaus above the town was built in 1894 .
The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 interrupted the brisk construction activity, which could only be resumed after the end of the war in the 1920s and 1930s with the construction of mainly villas and guest houses.
Building description
The buildings on Alexandrinenstraße are mostly stately, eaves-standing two- to three-story half - timbered buildings on a natural stone plinth or basement , clad with sheet metal shingles or slate according to the time . Exceptionally, there are also plastered solid structures such as B. House No. 18. The buildings usually have a rectangular floor plan and are often accessed via a side stone staircase. A flat sloping gable roof , a flat hipped roof , dwarf houses and gables are part of the typical construction. Most of the roofs are covered with slate or red clay tiles. Many buildings have one to two-storey glazed verandas or open loggias . From time to time you can also see multi-storey bay windows . The facades are structured by cornices and wooden corner blocks and designed window cladding and crowning. A small, street-side front garden with z. In most cases, the fencing that dates back to the construction period has been preserved, and it is mostly a wrought iron fence with posts on a natural stone base.

After extensive consultation, the company Ansorg from Arnstadt was commissioned with the construction, which had completed the fountain in 1889. In 1912 the fountain was inaugurated on the 75th birthday of the former mayor Storch. The fountain stone, the floral fountain bowl, the tape with two storks and the mask were made by the sculptor Möller from Sundhausen. In 2007 the fountain was restored by his great-grandson Thomas Möller. | location | |
