The list therefore includes the cultural monuments of the places Altenbergen , Catterfeld , Engelsbach , Georgenthal, Gospiteroda , Hohenkirchen , Leina , Nauendorf , Petriroda , Schönau vor dem Walde and Wipperoda .
Note: The list may be subject to changes that do not appear here. In individual cases, the current list can be viewed at the lower monument protection authority of the district office or at the building authority of the respective municipality or administrative association.
Definitions
The protection of immovable cultural monuments already arises from the existence of the legal requirements of § 2 of the Thuringian Monument Protection Act and does not depend on the entry in the list of monuments of the state or the municipalities. This means that objects that are not included in a list of monuments can definitely be monuments.
Cultural monuments
According to § 2 of the Thuringian Monument Protection Act, cultural monuments are all things, aggregates or parts of things that are of public interest for historical, artistic, technical, scientific, folklore or urban planning reasons as well as for reasons of historical village image maintenance. Monument ensembles and ground monuments are also counted among the cultural monuments.
Monument ensemble
A monument ensemble can be:
- Overall structural systems: Overall structural systems are, in particular, groups of buildings, uniformly designed quarters and settlements and historical town centers including the plants, open spaces and water areas associated with them.
- Characteristic street, square or townscape: A characteristic street, square or townscape is given in particular if the appearance of the facility is indicative of a specific era or development or of a characteristic construction method with different styles.
- Characteristic local floor plans: A characteristic local floor plan is given if the appearance of the facility is characteristic of a certain epoch or development, in particular with regard to local and settlement forms, street layouts, plot structures and fortifications.
- Historic parks and gardens: Historic parks and gardens are works of horticultural art, the location of which, as well as the architectural and plant design, bear witness to the function of the complex as a living space and self-portrayal of earlier forms of society and the culture it supported. This also includes animal and botanical gardens, provided they have their own overall historical and architectural design.
- historical production sites and plants.
Not all parts of a monument ensemble have to be cultural monuments in order to be considered cultural monuments.
Ground monument
Movable or immovable objects that were or are hidden in the ground or under water and that provide information about animal or plant life (paleontological monuments) or that represent evidence, remains or traces of human culture (archaeological monuments) are soil monuments.
Note
The present list of monuments does not make the distinctions described consistently.
Historical background
The rural community Georgenthal was created on December 31, 2019 from the merger of the communities Georgenthal, Hohenkirchen, Leinatal and Petriroda. With the exception of Leinatal, the above-mentioned communities were united in the Apfelstädtaue administrative community.

At the Finkenberg / Klosterstrasse | Ruins of the monastery | In 1335, the St. Georg Monastery owned almost 11,000 hectares of land with twelve villages and had an important horse breeding business. The monastery was looted by an insurgent peasant army on Easter vigil during the Peasants' War in 1525. In 1531 the monastery property was confiscated by Elector Johann von Sachsen. The former monastery and its twelve villages formed the Georgenthal office in the future. | 4-69, 4-70 / 2, 4-70 / 3 location Kloster Georgenthal at Wikipedia |

At the Finkenberg | Above: Hexenturm: Below: Kornhaus from the time of the monastery. |
Kornhaus: The Kornhaus, which is still preserved today, with the large rose window in the north gable has tracery in six-pass form and is an architectural treasure. Its inner diameter is 2.64 m. It was extensively restored in 2011. The granary probably dates from the 15th century and has been rebuilt several times. Although its original purpose cannot be proven, the installation of a chimney hood in the southeast corner suggests that it was a winter refectory. Since the monastery was visited by many pilgrims, it can also be used as a hospital or accommodation. In the post-monastery period, the building served as an interest and tax office for the Georgenthal office and was given its current name at that time. It was used as a granary until 1960 and today contains a lapidary with excavation pieces, e.g. B. Keystones with oak leaf or ivy ornaments from the destroyed vault of the abbey church as well as fragments of belt arches, vault ribs and vault approaches that seem almost Gothic. Next door is a natural spa park, formerly a monastery garden. Hexenturm: prison during the witch trials between 1646 and 1711. From this time 71 witch persecutions of the Georgenthal office are known. Most of the victims were cremated, and some women also died as a result of torture. Martha Lanz, 60, was burned at the stake on the nearby Hirzberg, while the 35-year-old widow of the charcoal burner Lorenz Ortlepp from Catterfeld endured the torture, was not confessed and acquitted. |
