Catterfeld is a part of the rural community Georgenthal in the district of Gotha in Thuringia .
location
The village is located on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest , about 15 kilometers south-southwest of Gotha . The federal road 88 touches the district coming from Crawinkel leading to Friedrichroda . The federal autobahn 4 passes further north with the junctions at Gotha and Waltershausen .
history
Catterfeld was first mentioned in 1195 as Chatervelt and was an early clearing settlement of the Landgraves of Thuringia. Hermann I owned a partial bailiwick over the place Catterfeld. The village hall, which belonged to the Georgenthal monastery , bordered the hall of the Reinhardsbrunn monastery. More important, however, was the associated patronage over the Hersfeld Monastery , which had developed into the largest landowners in Hesse and Thuringia. From the time of clearing, forest work was the most important source of income for the population, later also home work in the manufacture of toys and, from industrialization, work in the factories in the surrounding areas. After the Georgenthal Monastery was dissolved, the Catterfeld belonged to the Georgenthal Office from 1531 , which in turn belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha from 1640 .
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Altenbergen , which was immediately adjacent to the southwest, was incorporated into Catterfeld. The spatial separation between the two locations is formed by trunk road 88 , which was newly built in this section in 1961 . On January 1, 1996, Catterfeld became a district of the community of Leinatal , which became part of the rural community of Georgenthal on December 31, 2019.

- The old brewery: Documentary evidence of the existence of a brewery in Catterfeld goes back to 1645. In 1650, the community built the new brewery "Im Weiher" at the location of today's fire station ( Lage ), which is evident from historical community accounts. Every year the brewery was leased to an operator from the community, usually the Catterfeld innkeeper. In 1663/64 the new community tavern was built, today's "Restaurant zum Candelaber". Since then, the brewery and the community tavern have been leased as a single employee. In 1856 the tavern, the brewery, the malt kiln and the brewing pond (now a children's playground) were sold to a private person. In 1905 the brewery burned down and was not rebuilt. In the basement of the house Backshög 1, an attentive observer can still see the remains of the former malt kiln.
