history

Schönau vor dem Walde was first mentioned as Sconowe in the founding document of the Asolveroth monastery on St. George's Mountain near Altenbergen on March 20, 1143 . The place came into the possession of the Georgenthal monastery in 1331/35 and remained in their possession until the monastery was dissolved as a result of the Peasants' War in 1525. After that, from 1531 the place belonged to the Georgenthal office , which had belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha since 1640 . The historically most important branch of business was basket making , linen weavers , carters and sieve makers also looked after their families. The sieve makers guild was founded as early as 1666 . The basket makers followed this example in 1793. In 1958 there were 40 master basket makers in Schönau.

The construction of the Fröttstädt – Georgenthal railway line , where Schönau and Ernstroda had a train station in 1896, brought great advantages for the trade in products. Schönau received a water pipe in 1906, electricity in 1913/14, sewerage in 1930. After the Second World War, the railway line between Friedrichroda and Georgenthal was shut down and dismantled as a reparation for the Soviet Union . After the founding of the GDR, a rural outpatient clinic as well as a sales point for consumer goods and a kindergarten were built. Cooperative cattle breeding began in 1956, and two years later nine companies joined forces to found an LPG . Another two years later, all 101 farms were forcibly collectivized . Between 1952 and 1954, an outdoor forest swimming pool with a 25 m long swimmer's pool and children's pool was built on Engelsbacher Strasse, a reason for the first visits by holidaymakers who have been visiting the place since 1955. In the years that followed, hiking trails were laid out for visitors and locals and a bowling alley with two lanes was built. Further measures were the reconstruction of the school, the expansion of the kindergarten, the construction of a parking lot and the installation of a state doctor's practice. After the incorporation of Wipperoda in 1974, the community had 1150 inhabitants and an area of 1026 ha. At the end of the 1980s, Schönau received a shopping center. From 1756 to 1990 the place (only Schönau) grew from 500 inhabitants in 122 houses to 970 inhabitants in 246 houses. On April 4, 1991, the development of the commercial area In der Mittelaue north of the village began and in 1994/96 the development of the residential area Am Kirchstieg in the south of the village, on the northern slope of the Dammberg, where 80 new buildings were built.

On January 1, 1996, Schönau became part of the community of Leinatal . On December 31, 2019, Leinatal merged with other communities to form the rural community of Georgenthal.

  • St. Georg village church ( location → ): The church is on the northern edge of the village. The church tower contains a sacristy on the ground floor with a groin vault with paintings from around 1300. In 1335 a chapel was first mentioned in Schönau. Another previous church was built in 1513 and consecrated in 1515. The middle shrine of a former winged altar dates from 1519, the wings of which were sold to the museum in Gotha in 1900. The present church was built between 1691 and 1692. It was painted by Gottfried Wunderlich , the royal Schwarzburg court painter. The pulpit altar was built in the middle of the 18th century. The mirror vault is divided into six fields, which are painted with scenes from the New Testament. The 38 fields of the two-storey galleries on the north and south sides of the church bear motifs from the Old Testament. In 1850, the organ builder Knauf from Tabarz installed a new organ with an Art Nouveau prospectus, the necessary renovation of which began in 2013. In 1892 the church was renovated and restored for the 200th anniversary. A memorial plaque to Christian Ludwig Brehm was attached to the church in 1917 on his 130th birthday. In 1961 the roof structure was renovated, the paintings cleaned, the painted pillars exposed and the church rededicated. The church has been heated with gas since 1973. The church tower received a new slate roof and a new gold-plated tower ball in 1982. On June 27, 1993, the previously unnamed church was given the name St. George's Church.
