Tannenburg

The fir Castle , also Tannburg called, is a Outbound high medieval hilltop castle on a wide-bearing mountain south of the district Schoenau before the forest of Georgenthal in the district of Gotha on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest .
The Tannenburg was also known as the Thanburg in the 17th century.

location

The castle is located above the western outskirts of the Schönau district in front of the forest and can be reached quickly from there via signposted paths. The area is marked by a notice board in the western part in the summit position ( 446  m above sea level ) under the forest.

description

The facility at the top of the Schlossberg was secured on three sides by a wall-ditch fortification that can still be seen, the steep drop to the west offered natural protection. The facility used the western part of the summit plateau. Occasionally one encounters minor bumps in the ground, which can also have natural causes. Presumably, the structure consisted mainly of timber and half-timbered buildings, as no remains of the wall can be detected in the area.

history

The Tannenburg was mentioned as a fortification of the knight Hermann Stranz von Döllstädt in the 1418/19 Thuringian chronicle of the Eisenach chronicler Johannes Rothe . Its construction time, use and destruction are directly related to the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession (1247–1263). The castle site is now a protected ground monument .

Others

At the southwest edge of the castle site, a shelter was built by friends of the homeland. The dating affixed to the sign - Wallburg from the 8th century - has not yet been proven by relevant finds.
