Pukenui is a small settlement in the Far North District of Northland on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 28 km northwest of Awanui directly on Houhora Harbor on the Aupōuri Peninsula .
history
Te Houtaewa was a good competitor from Te Aupōuri , who waskilledin Pukenui during the Musket Wars of the early 19th century.
Hone Heke was defeated on June 12, 1845 by Tāmati Wāka Nene in the armed conflict over Te Ahuahu at Pukenui .
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 1 leads north through Pukenui to Cape Reinga . To the south it connects the settlement with Awanui and a little further with Kaitaia , which is around 38 km south-southeast.
Shipping
The settlement has a small jetty built into Houhora Harbor , from which a few fishing boats set off into the Pacific Ocean .
Education
Pukenui School ( Kaitaia ) is a coeducational primary school for grades 1-8. Class with a Decile rating of 3 and around 80 students in 2016.
