history

Like the surrounding clearing villages , Wipperoda probably originated in the 7th to 9th centuries. The name could come from one of the first residents named Wigbert or Wippertus, who cleared a piece of forest to settle here. The first documentary mention took place on December 4th, 1290. Before the Peasants' War , Wipperoda belonged to the Reinhardsbrunn monastery and was parish in Altenbergen , after which it became a branch of Schönau vor dem Walde. In administrative terms, Wipperoda came to the rulership of Reinhardsbrunn , which from 1640 belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha , from 1672 to the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and from 1826 to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha .

Because a brewery was built in 1699, but no tavern, one neighbor after the other always had to brew. The village received a new schoolhouse in 1748. In 1779 there were 40 residential buildings and 162 residents, including 26 school children. The residents exclusively farmed and raised cattle.

There were two inns and since 1883 a men's choir . On April 1, 1974, Wipperoda became part of Schönau vor dem Walde through incorporation . Since then, a community-owned restaurant has been built, parking spaces created, green spaces created, roads repaired and living conditions continuously improved. In 1990 the place received a drinking water pipe and was connected to the central supply network of the dam. Roads were expanded. On January 1, 1996, Wipperoda became part of the community of Leinatal , the smallest district of which it formed with 144 inhabitants. On December 31, 2019, Leinatal merged with other communities to form the rural community of Georgenthal.

church

No documents are available about the construction of the church. The first church in Wipperoda is said to have been built as early as the 12th century, parts of this structure have been preserved in today's walls (portal in the nave side). The current church was rebuilt in the 16th century and has a floor area of about 9 × 6 meters. The interior was first renewed in the baroque style in the 1780s, followed by several minor modernizations in order to meet the changing tastes of the time. The tower was built in 1779 on the old foundation walls of the previous building. It received a small tail dome with a lantern , tower button and weather vane attached . A covered staircase to the open gallery was added on the west side . The horseshoe-shaped, three-sided gallery has one on the long sides and several rows of seats on the gable side. At the beginning of the 1990s, the church and tower roofs were renovated and the newly fitted tower button was put back on. Further renovation work on the church lasted until 2003.
