Samuel Adrianus Naber (born July 16, 1828 in The Hague , † May 30, 1913 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch classical philologist.

Life

Samuel Adrianus was the son of the military doctor Johan Willem Anton Naber (* July 27, 1797 in The Hague; † April 29, 1876 in Amsterdam) and his wife Catharina Elisabeth Meerburg (* July 28, 1799 in Leiden; † January 24, 1840 in Den Hague). After attending the French school and high school in his hometown, he studied classical languages ​​at the University of Leiden from 1845 . Here, among others, Carel Gabriel Cobet and Petrus Hofman Peerlkamp became his formative teachers. In 1850 he received his doctorate in Leiden with the thesis De fide Andocidis orationis de mysteriis to the doctorate of literature. In 1851 he went to the grammar school in Haarlem as vice-principal , where he took over the rectorate in 1858. In 1860 he moved to the Willem III grammar school in Batavia as rector , was briefly active at the municipal grammar school in Leiden , in 1864 he moved as vice rector to the grammar school in Zwolle , where he was promoted to rector in 1868.

In 1871 he received a professorship at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam , where he changed to the teaching staff there when the University of Amsterdam was founded . Here he worked as a professor of the Latin and Greek languages ​​until his retirement in 1898. Naber wrote numerous articles for the Dutch scientific journals De Gids and Mnemosyne . Numerous text reviews of classic ancient writings originate from his pen, some of which have also appeared in German. These deal with the works of Marcus Cornelius Fronto , Homer and Photios I , among others . In addition, he wrote instructions for pedagogy and also appeared as an autobiographer. In the academy year 1878/79 he was elected Rector of the Amsterdam Alma Mater, in 1865 he became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens and he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

Naber married on July 4, 1855 in Haarlem with Anna Elizabeth l 'Honoré (* July 12, 1830 in The Hague, † April 9, 1915 in Amsterdam), the daughter of Samuel Pieter l' Honoré (* ± 1791 in The Hague ; † April 18, 1861 in The Hague) and his first wife Elizabeth Rebecca Oorthuijs (* ± 1795 in Rotterdam; † June 6, 1835 in The Hague). There are three sons and three daughters from the marriage:
