Poem by Claudius Ptolemy in school

The Leiden Municipal High School in Leiden is one of the oldest schools in the Netherlands. The history of the school begins in the Middle Ages . It is currently also the largest independent grammar school in the Netherlands, with more than 1,800 students .

history

The school was first mentioned in 1323 in a document from Count Wilhelm III. called schole or scoele . It is believed that the school was founded in the second half of the 13th century. After the siege of Leiden in 1574, Nicolaus Stochius, a Calvinist , became the principal of the school. He was appointed by the mayor of Leiden, Pieter Adriaansz. van der Werff , although the school was run by Lutherans .

Around 1700, the school was first called Gymnasium in the then official Latin documents; in Dutch it was called Latijnse School (Latin School). Until 1883 the school was housed in a building on Lokhorststrasse in downtown Leiden. The name Städtisches Gymnasium was first used in 1838. At that time, a new lesson system was introduced with six school years and a daily timetable spread over six days a week.

In 1883, a school building designed by the city architect Jan Willen Schaap in Doezastraße 2a was put into use. The grammar school was housed there until 1938.

Since 1938 the school has been located on Fruinallee, which is named after Robert Fruin , a teacher at this school and from 1860 to 1894 the first professor of Dutch history at the University of Leiden. This monumental building designed by Jan Neisingh is still in use. Between 1992 and 1996, some new buildings and extensions were made.

In 2008, a plot of land was reserved for a new school building in the Leiden-Nord zoning plan. The reason for the new building at a new location was not only the increase in the number of students but also the large distance to Leiden-Süd for many students. The architect Herman Hertzberger realized the design for a modern school building in a park-like environment near the classic town of Polder Mill . On January 4, 2010, the grammar school was split into two equal locations: the Athena location on Fruinallee and the Socrates location on Gooimeerallee.

Internationalization projects

The Municipal Gymnasium maintains many contacts with schools in other countries, including Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Italy and Belgium, in order to promote internationalization and familiarize students with the European Union and Europe. In addition, these contacts are encouraged in order to practice and maintain language skills. In the school year 2014/15 there was a student exchange with the Ritzefeld-Gymnasium Stolberg .
