Petrus Hofman Peerlkamp also: Peter Hofman Peerlkamp (born February 2, 1786 in Groningen , † March 28, 1865 in Hilversum ) was a Dutch classical philologist .

Life

The son of the teacher at the grammar school in Groningen Rudolph Peerlkamp and his wife Henrica Veenhorst had attended the grammar school in his hometown. In 1801 he began studying at the University of Groningen , where he lectured with Jacobus de Rhoer (1722–1813), Johannes Ruardi (1746–1815), Jan Bosman (1750–1804) and Jacob Baart de la Faille (1757–1823) visited. Excited by Hendrik Sypkens (1738–1812) for the oriental languages, he was particularly interested in Greek and Latin literature. In 1803 he became a teacher at the grammar school in Haarlem , in 1804 he was rector in Dokkum and in 1816 rector of the grammar school in Haarlem. In 1822 he was appointed professor of ancient literature and general history at the University of Leiden . He entered this office on June 15, 1822 with the speech de praecipua lege divinae Providentiae ab historico doctore observanda .

In addition, he participated in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the university in 1838/39 . He set this task with the Rede de perpetua, quae Acad. Leidensi cum gente Arausiaca intercessit, necessitudine etc. (Leiden 1840). Peerlkamp made a name for himself in his day as an author of literary-historical and philological-critical works. As a pioneer of an objective method of textual criticism, he founded the Bibliotheka critica nova with John Bake and others . Peerlkamp was from December 20, 1819 to October 26, 1851 a member of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sciences in Amsterdam , a member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden and other learned societies. He was also a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . On June 14, 1849, he was retired from his professorship by royal resolution, then settled in Hilversum, where he finally died after a long illness.

Peerlkamp was married to Sijtske Tjipkes Hiemstra. Three children are known from the marriage: Henderica Peerlkamp, ​​Anna Peerlkamp and Rudolph Harpert Peerlkamp.
