Dokkum is a town in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the north of the Netherlands , in the province of Fryslân . It has about 12,575 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The city gained particular fame when the missionary Bonifatius was murdered there in 754 ; for this reason Dokkum is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics.
history
Dokkum - originally Dockinga - is mentioned for the first time in connection with the assassination of Boniface, but it has not yet been clarified whether it is really the city of Dokkum or rather Dunkirk , located in Flanders (for details see Boniface ). In 1214 Olivier van Keulen preached the crusade , the crescent moon in the city's coat of arms still reminds of it today.
As the fifth city in the province of Friesland (after Stavoren , Harlingen , Leeuwarden and IJlst ), Dokkum was granted city rights in 1298 (see also: Friese eleven steden ). During the Eighty Years' War against Spain , Dokkum was right between the fronts until it finally fell back into the hands of the Geusen in 1572 . Only after the Union of Utrecht began in 1579 did calm return to the city.
Due to its location with a connection to the North Sea , Dokkum was of great strategic importance, especially trade with Spain was mainly carried out via the city. City walls were built between 1581 and 1582, and in 1597 the Frisian Admiralty (corresponding to today's navy ) settled in Dokkum. The town went bankrupt through the land reclamation measures and finally the construction of the “ Stroobosser Trekvaart ” canal (1654–1656). The Admiralty had already moved to Harlingen in 1645 , and Dokkum developed from a seaside town to a town with a more rural character.
Dokkum was an independent municipality until 1984, but was then merged with West and East Dongeradeel to form today's municipality of Dongeradeel. This has been part of Noardeast-Fryslân since 2019.In 2004, the city celebrated its 1250th anniversary. The death of Boniface is the first documented mention of Dokkum and is now regarded as the year the city was founded.
