Sape was the son of Aritius Sijbrandus Talma (born September 6, 1797 in Engwierum; † July 4, 1882 in Dokkum) and his wife Elisabeth Geertruid Charlotte van Eichstorff (born March 13, 1814 in Dokkum; † January 21, 1895 in Utrecht) . He attended high school in his hometown and began studying at Utrecht University in 1866 . Here Franciscus Cornelis Donders , Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann and Willem Koster became his formative teachers. After winning a prize with the essay Over de rol der witte bloeddcellen bij ontsteking (freely translated into German: On the role of white blood cells in inflammation ), he became an assistant to Gozewijn Jan Loncq at the clinical hospital in Utrecht during his studies . On March 24, 1873 he received his doctorate in medicine with the work Over licht- en kleurperceptie ( On light and color perception ).

On July 14, 1876, he was appointed professor for pathology and therapy of internal diseases, which task he took on on October 6 of the same year with the introductory speech Het experiment in de geneeskunde (free German: The experiment in medicine ). In 1881 he was also given a teaching position for pharmacy. In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1881/82 . In 1903 he became a corresponding member of the Belgian Academy of Medicine, was a corresponding member of the Royal Imperial Society of Doctors in Vienna, member of the provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences and, in 1898, Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . Talma surgery for omentopexy (liver cirrhosis) has been named after him since 1898.
