Ids Wiersma (born June 21, 1878 in Brantgum , † August 24, 1965 in Dokkum ) was a Dutch - Frisian illustrator, lithographer , painter , etcher and draftsman of villages, interiors, landscapes, portraits and cities. From 1930 Ids concentrated his artistic activity on the representation of rural life.

Life

Born as the son of the worker Doeke Goslings Wiersma and Eke Idzes (née Koopmans), he grew up in modest circumstances and drew a series of drawings for his sick sister Aaltje at a young age. His brother Gosling later became a staunch socialist .

In the spring of 1891 the painter Petrus Cornelis Houtman (1853–1933) recommended Ids to take a closer look at painting. From 1895 Ids worked for the painter Leyenaar and learned the basic handling of color. During this time, Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Jozef Israëls Ids' works that had been created up to that point were examined and encouraged to study art in The Hague .

Painting (selection and reception)

  • From an industrial point of view, Ids documented the not-yet-advanced electrification and supervision during the minting in the painting of the Royal Dutch Mint from 1911 . The mint master sits at his desk, differs from the employees in the color of his work clothes, the transmission is visible and there is apparently no electrical lighting.
  • From a technical point of view, Id's painting butter mill and cheese dairy is worth highlighting. The painting is the only representation of the function and construction of a butter mill operated by a transmission driven by a butter horse.
