Ragnarok Online 2: The Gate of the World : (kor .: 라그나로크 온라인 2: The Gate of the World) is the official successor to the popular MMORPG Ragnarok Online from the Gravity Corp. As in its predecessor, the game world is based on the old Norse mythology . The soundtrack is produced by Yoko Kanno , best known for her work on Cowboy Bebop , Ghost in the Shell and other anime series.

After the game went into beta in 2006, it has been continuously improved and changed. Finally, in 2010, a completely new version of the original game was created. In July 2010, Gravity announced that the original version of Ragnarok 2: The Gate of the World has been discarded and is giving way to a new version, Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second . The new version should stick much more closely to its predecessor, the MMORPG Ragnarok Online .

The game was presented for the first time in November 2004 at the KAMEX (South Korean Game Expo). The first trailer was shown during the Expo, where player characters walked around in a 3D graphics- based urban environment.

In September 2005, Gravity Corp. started a promotion to promote the game at the annual Tokyo Game Show , which takes place from 16-18. September took place to show. The visitors had the opportunity to play the game for the first time. During this time, Gravity released some Ragnarok Online II gameplay videos, as well as a short animated film made public.

Beta phase

In December 2006, Gravity finally began accepting registrations for the first closed beta in South Korea . The phase for the first closed beta ended on December 29, 2006. Registration for participation in the beta was possible two weeks beforehand on the Gravitys website. Over 190,000 registrations were received, but only 2000 were selected. They will now play the game in a three-day test period from 27. – 29. December could test. Due to some technical problems and server optimizations, the actual test period was only 10 hours.

According to an interview by the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo and the developer studio Team Mercury , the main goal of the first closed beta was only to test the game characters. You wanted to see how the players reacted to the overall picture of the game as well as to the design of the characters.

For the second phase of the Korean closed beta, 3000 players who had previously registered on their website were automatically accepted. In addition, another 5,000 players were selected by February 22, 2007. Those who had already participated in the first beta phase could also participate in the second beta phase. Towards the end of this phase, another 10,000 players were invited to an event, which ultimately resulted in 20,000 selected accounts.

The third phase of the Korean Closed Beta ran from April 26th to May 5th, 2007. It was accessible to 100,000 registered users as well as to those who participated in the previous phases. In order to cope with the great rush, Gravity made a second server available in order to better distribute the expected data traffic .

Finally, the Korean Open Beta followed, which should run from May 28, 2007 until an unspecified date, with the official release expected shortly thereafter. It is available to all Korean citizens. During the first week, the servers were expanded several times and additional servers were installed as the capacities were quickly exhausted. During the course of the open beta, the game's interface was adapted more often.

In 2008 the number of servers was reduced to two, as only very few players are playing on the servers compared to the opening phase of the Open Beta in May 2007. Many places in the game are now usually empty (eg "Hodemines" and "Prontera").

Due to the fact that the game was poorly received in Korea, personnel changes were made in the management positions. This also had a direct impact on the development of Ragnarok Online II, the development of which initially came to a practical standstill. Since then, the game has been completely renewed and should now appear under the title Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second .
