Malte Sartorius (born November 8, 1933 in Waldlinden / East Prussia ; † September 11, 2017 in Braunschweig ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He was a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig .

life and work

After graduating from high school in Göttingen in 1954 , Sartorius studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Gerhard Gollwitzer (general artistic training), Christoff Schellenberger (works) and Karl Rössing (free graphics). The first lithographs and linocuts in 1956 were made from 1955. Since then he has dealt almost exclusively with drawings and prints. In 1958 he passed the 1st state examination for art education at the Stuttgart Academy. From 1960 he printed his first woodcuts and made attempts at etching .

In 1963 he was appointed to the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts and took over the class for basic artistic training and in 1966 the class for free graphics . In 1966/67 he continued to develop his etching technique. From 1970 to 1977 he made large colored pencil drawings and color screen prints. In 1999 Sartorius retired. He was a member of the German Association of Artists and the Munich Secession .

For his filigree, color-reduced drawings and etchings, Sartorius mostly used photographs as templates, which he used as inspiration for his own compositions. His preferred motifs were landscapes and still lifes, which he worked out in great detail and using the contrast of light and shadow in the manner of the old masters.

Malte Sartorius has remained close to his teacher Karl Rössing since his student days. Rössing himself had included him in 1959 together with Robert Förch, Walter Rabe and Günter Schöllkopf in the exhibition "Karl Rössing and his school" at the Heilbronn Art Association . In 1977 he figured in a larger group of former students who met on the occasion of the 80th birthday of their teacher in his presence at the Stuttgart Academy - the first and so far last event in this form.

He lived and worked in Braunschweig and Altea, Spain . Sartorius died in September 2017 at the age of 83 in Braunschweig.
