Lake-Traverse Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation in the northeast of the State of South Dakota and to a lesser extent in the southeast of North Dakota . The reservation spans parts of seven counties in these states, namely Roberts Counties , Marshall Counties , Day Counties , Grant Counties , and Codington Counties in South Dakota and Sargent Counties , Richland County in North Dakota, with 60% of the reservation area located in Roberts County.

The reserve was created in 1867 by a treaty between the government of the United States and the Santee Dakota - Sioux Indian tribe - the "Lake Traverse Treaty" of 1867 within its current boundaries. The reserve has a size of 429.59 km² and had a population of 10,408 people according to a 2000 census. The reservation is headquartered in Agency Village , South Dakota. The largest settlement on the reservation is Sisseton , South Dakota.

Tribal government

According to the constitution of October 16, 1946, the government consists of a council with seven members. This council is officially called the "Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribal Council". A committee of three people forms the executive, the "Tribal Chairman", the "Vice Chairman" and the "Tribal Secretary". The members of the Council and the Committee are elected in October in primary elections and in November in elections for four years. An election to the same office is only permitted twice without a break of two years. The Council meets every Tuesday, Wednesday the first week of the month and every third Thursday of the month. The constitution was last amended on November 21, 1978 and June 9, 1980.
