geography

The city is located between South San Francisco and Millbrae near the San Francisco International Airport and about 12 miles south of downtown San Francisco . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total of 14.1 square kilometers of land. The city stretches from mostly flat land near San Francisco Bay to the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains , which rise 150 feet above sea level in Crestmoor and 150 feet in Portola Highlands. The city hall is officially 12.5 meters high.

Parts of Mills Park, Crestmoor and Rollingwood are very hilly and have a few canyons. Streams flow largely twisted (covered) from springs in the hills through the city towards San Francisco Bay. Just west of Skyline Boulevard, outside the city, extends the man-made San Andreas Lake , which gave its name to the famous San Andreas Fault in 1895 . This lake is one of several water reservoirs for San Francisco's water supply and provides drinking water for San Francisco and some communities in San Mateo County - including parts of San Bruno.
