The San Andreas Lake is an artificial lake at 138 meters above sea level in the reduction of the San Andreas Fault , near the cities of Millbrae and San Bruno in San Mateo County , California , USA . It is traversed by the San Andreas Creek and fed by the runoff water of a catchment area of eleven square kilometers and holds a water volume of 23.469 million cubic meters . It has a water surface of 220 hectares , which is stretched over a maximum length of 4.8 kilometers .

Gaspar de Portolà passed here on November 4, 1769, shortly before he discovered the Bay of San Francisco . The valley of the San Andreas Creek was named "Cañada de San Andrés" by Francisco Palóu in 1774 . Professor Andrew Cowper Lawson of the University of California, Berkeley , who discovered the San Andreas Fault around the lake, named the fault after the lake in 1895. The original smaller natural water basin was enlarged by the construction of an earth dam in 1875 and is now used as a water reservoir and may therefore not be used as bathing water. The dam survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake without damage.
