WNYC-AM is the flagship of New York Public Radio from New York City . The program is broadcast over medium wave 820 kHz with 10 kW, as well as simulcasted over WNYC-FM on VHF 93.9 MHz.

history

The AM station first broadcast on July 8, 1924, making it one of the oldest radio stations in the United States. The VHF frequency began regular broadcasts on March 13, 1943 on 93.9 FM. The transmitter and two transmitters were initially located on Kent Street in Brooklyn before moving to Belleville Turnpike in Kearny , New Jersey.

The VHF and medium wave transmitters sometimes broadcast a common program, and they are sometimes split up for different programs. WNYC is a member of the NPR network, which means that the program includes both in-house productions and broadcasts from the network.

The analysis software company Cision lists WNYC as the third most popular US public radio station by NPR.

program

WNYC mainly broadcasts information and newstalk programs with political, cultural and economic topics, with NPR taking over programs that are broadcast throughout the USA and producing local broadcasts for the New York audience. In the mornings and afternoons, WNYC offers NPR's flagship information programs Morning Edition and All Things Considered , with WNYC temporarily disengaging for its regional news and local reports, as is common for all local NPR stations in the USA. While the VHF version offers electronic music programs every working day from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. , the medium wave offers a 24-hour word program.

The flagship programs of WNYC's talk program are two call-in programs that give listeners the opportunity to exchange their views with the moderators and guests:

  • The Brian Teacher Show : Mon – Fri 10: 00-12: 00
  • The Leonard Lopate Show : Mon-Fri 12: 00-14: 00

WNYC also produces programs that are distributed by NPR and Public Radio International (PRI). These are:

  • On The Media : Reports from around the world of media (NPR)
  • Studio 360 : Cultural Program (PRI)
  • The Takeaway : News Program ( PRI )

WNYC also occasionally broadcasts information programs from the BBC World Service . It is the only information-oriented full program in the region and therefore has no competition. On the commercial radio side, the broadcasting area of WNYC is covered by the pure news channels WCBS and WINS , which, however, are practically limited to local news, weather, traffic information and local sports news, with some broadcasting in 10-minute intervals and excessive advertising breaks accept (approx. 20 interruptions per hour).

Furthermore, there are various commercial Newstalk stations on the New York market with mainly radical conservative programs such as the Rush Limbaugh Show and an offshoot of the alternative milieu Newstalker Air America Radio (until its bankruptcy in 2010).
