WBGO ( 88.3 FM, Jazz 88 ) is an American radio broadcaster from Newark in the US state of New Jersey .

The station's program can be received via Internet radio , HD radio and the FM frequency 88.3 MHz . Jazz music is mainly played. The operator is Newark Public Radio, Inc., headquartered in Newark and funded by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The station is run as a non-profit organization according to the specifications of a 501 (c) organization . Broadcasting began in 1980. For a long time, WBGO was the only jazz radio station in the New York Metropolitan Area .

From 1985 to 2008, the broadcaster produced the weekly program JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater . The station is currently co-producing the program with NPR Music and the cultural organization Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC).

Awards

The station won the Keeping the Blues Alive Award published by the US Blues Foundation and twice the Jazz Station of the Year Award from the National Association of Broadcasters .

The transmitter is broadcast with an effective radiated power of 2,500 watts . The transmitter for broadcasting is on the building of the Four Times Square in New York City .
