KCRW-FM (also Public Radio for Southern California ) is a US -American Public radio stations from Santa Monica in the US state of California . KCRW-FM broadcasts on the VHF frequency 89.9 M Hz and is operated by Santa Monica College .

The station is known for its association with the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) music and film festival in Austin . The station released several CD releases of the festival.

KCRW operates the all-music channel (all music) Eclectic 24 and the all-news channel KCRW's News24 .

In 2017, KCRW took over the frequency from NPR Berlin UKW 104.1 MHz ( Schöneberg ) and has been broadcasting its KCRW Berlin program there since then, with a mix of essential NPR programs, KCRW takeovers and in-house productions.

KCRW was founded in 1945 on the campus of Santa Monica College to train former military personnel in the then innovative industry as "radio servicemen". CRW stood for College Radio Workshop .

In addition to the main frequency of 89.9 MHz, the program is also broadcast via filling stations in Twentynine Palms (K207FA) on 89.3 MHz with 10 watts and in Goleta (K295AH) on 106.9 MHz with 10 watts each.

KCRW produces various music programs that are distributed over the NPR network. The Morning Becomes Eclectic show has been aired since 1977. The station has its own showcase at the SXSW in Austin. In 2016, the KCRW headliner Future Islands won SXSW's Grulke Prize for US Developing Act . The Santa Monica program is also being taken over by KCRY .

Since mid-October 2017, KCRW Berlin has been broadcast terrestrially on the FM frequency 104.1 MHz via the Berlin-Schöneberg transmitter . A program is broadcast with a mixture of programs produced locally in Berlin, as well as the classic shows from NPR from Washington and KCRW from Los Angeles. Los Angeles has been a twin city of Berlin since 1967 . Former US ambassador to Germany John Kornblum is one of the supporters of the KCRW Berlin project .

The Media Council of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (MAAB) decided in the meeting on September 13, 2017, in accordance with the State Treaty on Cooperation between Berlin and Brandenburg in the field of the media (MStV), that KCRW in Berlin would operate VHF for a period of seven years -Frequency 104.1 MHz is allocated. Until then, NPR Berlin was broadcasting on FM 104.1 MHz . NPR had given back the license for the frequency due to internal restructuring. In addition to KCRW, eleven other providers applied for the frequency; including BHeins, Capital Radio Berlin , lulu.fm, MAXX fm, pure fm, Radio Paloma Berlin, Radio Potsdam, Sunshine live and others. a. KCRW Berlin started broadcasting on October 16, 2017.

A number of sponsors of the project are named in the program, classic radio advertising is not broadcast.
