NPR Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NPR Berlin was a Berlin radio station that was on the air between April 2006 and October 15, 2017. NPR Berlin broadcast on frequency 104.1 FM in English and was operated by the non-commercial radio network National Public Radio ( NPR ) from the USA.

history

According to the Berliner Zeitung, NPR Berlin was the first NPR offshoot "that can be received around the clock via VHF outside the USA". In addition to the BBC World Service and Radio France Internationale , the Voice of America ( VOA ), financed by the US government, as the voice of the western victorious powers, had a broadcast license in Berlin. After the withdrawal of the VOA, the US provider NPR, which is considered liberal, was able to take over a frequency.

NPR Berlin broadcast a mix of its own program parts (e.g. Berlin Journal ) and takeovers (including the news flagships Morning Edition , Weekend Edition and All Things Considered , as well as entertainment programs such as Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me! And Car Talk ). The transmitter on the Postbank skyscraper on Halleschen Ufer in Kreuzberg could be received on the VHF frequency 104.1 MHz in the city and beyond, via Internet live streaming all over the world.

An internet stream was added on August 2, 2010. In August 2010, 92 listeners donated around € 8,000 to keep the station running.

In 2015, NPR subsidized the station with US $ 181,443.

In December 2016, NPR announced that it was looking for ways to minimize the grants NPR Berlin receives, including a return of the broadcast license and closure of NPR Media Berlin, the broadcaster's operator.

In the first quarter of 2017, NPR returned the license to mabb . On April 12, mabb re-tendered the frequency that should be available from October 1, 2017. On September 14, it was announced that the frequency had been assigned to KCRW Berlin . KCRW Berlin started operations on October 16, 2017.
