Goleta is a city in Santa Barbara County in the US state of California , United States , with 28,600 inhabitants (as of 2004). The urban area has a size of 68.3 km².

On February 23, 1942, the first Japanese attack on the American mainland took place near Goleta . The submarine I-17, under the command of Captain Nishino, shot at an oil refinery with 13 artillery shells, but did little damage.

In Goleta, the American automobile manufacturer Clénet Coachworks produced around 430 vehicles in the style of neo-classics between 1976 and 1982, which today have achieved some fame in the automobile scene.
