Hawaii Public Radio (HPR) is the public public radio broadcasting company of the US state of Hawaii . In addition to a TV station, HPR now operates two radio programs and six radio stations.
history
The history of Hawaii Public Radio begins with the radio station KHPR . On November 13, 1981, the station went on air as one of the smallest stations in the USA. The workforce consists of two people: the "General Manager" Cliff Eblen and the "Music" Director "Bob Miller. The first studios were in rented rooms on the University of Hawaii campus . In 1987 HPI moved to its current studios. One year later HPI joined the US-wide public radio network of the NPR and put a second station on Maui into operation.
With the launch of KIPO in 1989, HPR expanded its program offering to include a “news and information” format.
In 2011, 65 percent of the funding for HPR came from voluntary contributions from listeners.
HPR reported in detail on the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 in Honolulu with over 9,000 participants.
