NewsRadio is an American sitcom developedby Paul Simms and firstbroadcaston NBC from 1995 to 1999 .

action

Set on WNYX , a fictional New York radio news station , the series begins with Dave Nelson hired as its new news director. He has to bring the eccentric characters of the employees and his boss under one roof.

The dialogues on NewsRadio run at high speed and are often absurd. Visual gags were often used as a counterbalance to the intelligent and often political dialogues. The show's creator, Paul Simms, said the show's target audience is over 30s with college degrees.

The extreme absurdity and senselessness were intensified in the finals of the third and fourth seasons. In these, the figures were not in the usual location, a modern office in New York , but first in space and then on board the Titanic .

production

  • Filming of the series was suspended for a long time because of the murder of actor Phil Hartman . The other actors needed time to come to terms with their grief. From episode 76, the character Bill McNeal played by Hartman no longer appears. But the series continued.
  • The series was on the verge of being canceled by NBC each season .

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing was done by the dubbing company Plaza-Synchron in Munich . Andreas W. Schmidt was responsible for the German version .

Trivia

  • Greg Lee played the role of the electrician in the pilot, and that character's name was Rick in that episode . Later his name would be Ted Garelli . The role was to be played in the series by Ray Romano , but he canceled when he was offered the lead role in another sitcom ( Everybody Loves Raymond , known in German-speaking countries as Alle liebe Raymond ). Instead of Ray Romano, the role was cast by Joe Rogan . The series' creators found it easier to give the character the same name as its actor; Ted Garelli became Joe Garelli.
  • In the pilot episode, the role of Catherine Duke played Ella Joyce . In all later episodes she is played by Khandi Alexander .
  • Maura Tierney wasn't added to the cast until the day before the pilot was filmed.
  • Lauren Graham starred as Andrea in episodes 55-58.
  • Jon Lovitz has three appearances on NewsRadio :
  1. a guest appearance as an insane asylum inmate who befriends Bill McNeal
  2. a guest appearance as a suicidal man who stands outside on the parapet of the building in front of Dave's window and wants to jump
  3. permanently as Max Lewis
  • Some episodes are named after albums by Led Zeppelin , even if the name of this album has nothing to do with the episode's content.
  • In the opening credits, Dave Foley's name is shown next to a photo of the World Trade Center in New York. The two towers were nicknamed Dave and Nelson. The character that Foley plays is called Dave Nelson. The series inventor, Paul Simms says it was a coincidence.
  • The room that is the production studio in the pilot is the break room for the rest of the series (except in episode 4).
  • Dave Foley is said to love the sitcom Green Acres just like his character Dave Nelson and drink several cups of coffee a day.
