Mississippi Public Broadcasting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mississippi Public Broadcasting is the public broadcaster of the US state Mississippi . He operates TV and radio stations and is a member of the PBS and NPR network.

history

Mississippi was one of the last US states to set up a public broadcasting company . It was not until the late 1960s that the state government decided to introduce its own educational television. After a year of planning, WMAA-TV (now WMPN-TV ) of the newly created Mississippi Authority for Educational Television went on air in 1970 .

Only four months after it started broadcasting, WMAA surprisingly became known nationwide when it took Sesame Street out of the program because it showed a mixed-race cast ("racially integrated cast"). After a nationwide outrage, the children's program was broadcast again after a 22-day break. It was not until 1983 that the MPB radio network was set up with the first public radio station in Mississippi .

program

The in-house productions include, for example, the award-winning Mississippi Moments program . The weekly broadcast is a cooperation of the "Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage", the "Mississippi Humanities Council" and MPB. Since February 2005, over 4,000 interviews have been conducted with people in Mississippi. Thematically, the topics range from activists of the Civil Right Movement, to veterans, to UFOs etc.

MPB radio

MPB Radio includes eight stations that cover most of the state. In addition to NPR programs, other public radio programs are taken over, enriched by a number of own productions. MPB broadcasts a 24-hour classic radio service on the second HD channel. The brand "Music Radio" is used here, while the regular MPB radio is called "Think Radio".
