Mount Vernon is a city and county seat in Skagit County in the US state of Washington .
Demographics
The city, which according to the 2000 census has 26,232 inhabitants, covers an area of 29.4 km². Mount Vernon has 75.4% white people, 2.6% Asian, 1.0% Native American, 0.7% African-American, 17.3% other races, and 3.0% over as an ethnic group. Latinos (regardless of belonging to the ethnic groups mentioned) make up 25.1% of the population.
40.9% of Mount Vernon's residents are 24 years of age or younger; 12.5% are older than 65; the average age is 31 years.
15.9% of the population live below the poverty line and the median income of 9,276 households is USD 37,999.
history
The town's origins go back to 1870 when Jasper Gates and Joseph Dwelley settled on the banks of the Skagit River . Later, the teacher Harrison Clothier and one of his students, EG English, also settled on site. The four men are considered the founding fathers; the establishment itself did not officially take place until July 5, 1893.

particularities
Mount Vernon has been known since 1983 primarily for its annual spring tulip festival . Since the climate in Mount Vernon is similar to that in Holland , the tulips thrive here particularly well. Many of the Mount Vernon tulips are even exported to Holland and sold there as Dutch tulips. In 1998, Mount Vernon was named # 1 of the Most Beautiful Small Cities in the United States by the New Rate Guide to Life in America's Small Cities .
