Lee Zavitz

Leland George Zavitz (born August 20, 1904 in Mount Vernon , Washington , † June 2, 1977 in Los Angeles ) was an American special effects artist who received the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1951 for Endstation Moon .

Life

In 1939 he was in John Fords for the first time ... then the hurricane came in charge of the special effects. This was followed by films like Gone with the Wind , where he was responsible for the fire effects, Under the Black Flag and a Maid's Diary . In 1951 he received the Oscar in the category Best Visual Effects for Endstation Mond . The science fiction film was based on a novel by Robert A. Heinlein .

In the 1950s he also worked in special effects on films such as Abbott and Costello as a pirate against his will , Around the World in 80 Days and From the Earth to the Moon . His last film was the US war film The Castle in the Ardennes by director Sydney Pollack in 1969 .
