occupation

Sodom and Gomorrah (original film title: Sodom and Gomorrah ) is a 1961–1962 monumental film that tells in the form of a fictional biblical story of the fall of the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah .

action

The main focus of the story is on Sodom and its power-hungry Queen Bera.

She and her brother Astaroth , with whom she also has an incestuous love affair, compete with each other, since both seek royal dignity.

An ideal time to demonstrate their leadership qualities seems to come when a tribe of Hebrews migrates to the fertile plains around Sodom. Their leader is Lot , Abraham's nephew . Bera and Astaroth charge high taxes independently of one another and systematically squeeze out the little people. For this purpose the slave girl Ildith is sent to Lot to scout out the tribe. But Ildith and Lot fall in love.

Ildith can get Lot to move to town. Here the city is falling into disrepair until God decides to destroy it. Lot's tribe barely escapes the inferno, but Ildith is killed when, contrary to God's orders, she looks back on the dying city.

background

The monumental film directed in Morocco and Rome knows how to retell the biblical story. However, through the fictions that do occur, the drama could have taken place in any other part of the ancient world. Sodom and Gomorrah is one of the few monumental films that has never been nominated for a film award.

Reviews

"Two renowned filmmakers process horrific" modified "biblical motifs and names into an often bloodthirsty adventure film in the sense of the distributor motto" Sweet life 4000 years ago "."

A. Aprà remarked in Filmcritica that Aldrich shows again that the physical actions of his actors are more important to him than the scenery or the story.
