The Rabenberg is an almost 913  m high mountain massif in the Ore Mountains between Johanngeorgenstadt and Breitenbrunn in the Saxon Ore Mountains District not far from the border with the Czech Republic . A distinction is made between the front and the rear Rabenberg, which together form a wooded area about three kilometers in diameter. The scattered settlement on the Rabenberg is a district of Breitenbrunn.

geology

The area lies in the inner and outer contact zone of the Eibenstock granite massif . In the inner contact zone, andalusite mica rock and fruit slate predominate, in the outer spotty phyllites in which quartzites and amphibolites are embedded. Fine-grain granite occurs only at the western foot of the mountain range. On the northeast slope there is an old man's body that was the subject of insignificant tin ore mining . Smaller deposits of pyrites have also been discovered. Tin ores and rocks containing silver were mined in the 18th and 19th centuries for the purpose of metal extraction.

Flora and fauna

Beech , fir and spruce are the predominant forest trees on the Rabenberg massif. The following animals were frequently observed at Rabenberg: black-brown squirrels , crossbill , black woodpeckers , owls and screech owls , nutcrackers , jays , finches , chickadees , robins , Firecrest , cuckoo , Buzzard . Ants, spiders and butterflies are found on insects.

history

Alt-Rabenberg (around 2001)

Already in the early modern period there was lively tin and iron ore mining in the area around the mountain, in the 18th century the existence of at least 66 mines was documented. It is worth mentioning that some of the then important mines ( Philippi Jakobi , 'Reiche Zeche', ' Valerian ', ' Aaron ', ' Friedrich August Stolln ') were operated by trade unions. The other pits (such as ' Osterlamm Fundgrube ', 'Wolfgang', 'Rote Zeche', 'Helene Stollen', 'Karfreitagglück') belonged to self-employed people; that is, miners who leased the mine and worked on their own wages.

In connection with the uranium mining of SDAG Wismut , the mining settlement of the same name, Rabenberg , was built on the plateau in 1948 and is now a sports park.

The Preißhaus with the Preisshausbuche stood on the Hinterer Rabenberg until 1846 .

Paths to the mountain and the surrounding area

The Rabenberg can be reached via a road from Breitenbrunn. For hikers, several paths lead from Breitenbrunn, Erlabrunn and Johanngeorgenstadt up the mountain. Some of the hiking trails with their popular names ('Heuschuppenweg', 'Tränktrögel', 'Soldiersbrunn') are reminiscent of landmarks or traditional reports.

The actual summit is forested and offers no view. However, there is a rock here with an old survey point. In its vicinity, the gallows wing leads in a south-easterly direction to the border crossing point at Himmelswiese . From here hiking trails lead to half mile , Rozhraní and to the mountain hotel Roter Fuchs in Podlesí .
