The virus family Plasmaviridae (gr. Πλάσμα: structure) comprises only one genus plasma virus of bacteriophages with a circular, double-stranded DNA genome .

Structure of the L2 phage

The Plasmaviridae do not have a capsid ; its dsDNA genome is strongly twisted ( supercoiled ) associated with viral, basic nucleoproteins and is packaged directly in a lipid membrane as a so-called nucleoprotein complex. Due to the lack of a capsid, the plasmaviridae are irregularly shaped and on average about 80 nm in diameter (range 50–125 nm). In the electron microscope they appear rather bulbous, whereby virus particles with dense content (packed nucleoprotein complex) can be distinguished from those without content within the membrane (empty virions ). At least four structural proteins could be detected in the virion, of which the product of the open reading frame (ORF) ORF12 (17  kDa ) could represent the basic nucleoprotein and ORF13 (81 kDa) an integral membrane protein . The genome of the prototype of the family, the acholeplasm phage L2 , is 11,965 bp in size and has 15 ORFs, with the reading frame ORF13 * overlapping with ORF13 by shifting the reading frame ( frameshift ).

The Acholeplasma phage L2 and also preliminary species of plasma virus (phage v1, v2, v4, v5 and v7) infect different strains of the bacterium Acholeplasma laidlawii (family Mycoplasmataceae ); other preliminary species host Acholeplasma modicum (' Phage M2 ') and Acholeplasma oculi (' Phage O1 ').
