ExPASy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ExPASy ("Expert Protein Analysis System", in German "Scientific Protein Analysis System") is a portal for bioinformatics tools and biochemistry databases , which was invented and managed by Amos Bairoch from the Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics (SIB) . In addition to the protein database Swiss Prot , ExPASy is a server that offers a variety of bioinformatics tools, scientific sources and other databases and software tools in almost all different areas of the life sciences . ExPASy covers the areas of proteomics , genetics , phylogenesis / systems biology , evolution , population genetics , transcriptomy , drug design and biophysics . It is one of the most important servers for protein analysis, with 53 tools and 25 databases. The individual areas (databases, bioinformatics tools, etc.) are managed and processed decentrally by 20 different SIB groups, which are located across Switzerland . In addition, external sources are linked and integrated in ExPASy. In addition, a search function is integrated into the portal, which allows you to search in selected sources on the portal. The ExPASy server is quality checked, unlike, for example, data on Pubmed from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The site is designed in such a way that both experts and people who only occasionally use bioinformatic databases and tools can find their way around.

From the creation of the ExPASy portal on August 1, 1993 to April 5, 2007, the server has been queried a billion times.

The initiators of the development were Ron Appel (* 1959) and Amos Bairoch .
