WEVL is an American radio station based in Memphis, Tennessee . WEVL broadcasts in Memphis on 89.9 MHz (VHF).

history

The station, which has existed since 1976, is mainly operated by volunteers and has only three permanent employees. The DJs create their own programs largely autonomously, and the programs accordingly have a wide range of musical styles. Most of the programs, however, focus on folk , blues , gospel , rockabilly and world music .

Initially, the station broadcast with a 10-watt transmitter and was considered the "secret of downtown residents" in Memphis. He now owns a 4800 watt transmitter. The transmission area now has a radius of about 80 kilometers from Memphis.

In polls by the Memphis Flyer newspaper , WEVL regularly ranks among the top 3 radio stations in Memphis. The station is considered "one of the city's pearls". According to Southern Living magazine, "Not only is it by far the best radio station in Memphis, it is also largely responsible for ensuring that Memphis is still an excellent city of music." The American Heritage Magazine , in turn, looks wevl still most likely of all radio stations in the city in the wake of Dewey Phillips , the radio DJ, the first Elvis Presley boards played.

The station got into the media nationwide after the murder of one of its most famous DJs, Dee Henderson , who designed Cap'n Pete's Blues Cruise for 26 years . For this he received the Keeping The Blues Alive Award from the Blues Foundation .
