Sean Hannity (born December 30, 1961 in New York City , New York ) is an American radio and television presenter and author.

Life and work

Youth, Education and Early Career (1961 to 1989)

Hannity was born in 1961 to Hugh J. Hannity and his wife Lillian F. Hannity. His paternal and maternal grandparents were immigrants from Ireland. Hannity grew up with his two sisters, Joanne S. Hannity and Therese (Hannity) Grisham, in Franklin Square, New York State. In 1980 he graduated from the Catholic St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary High School in Uniondale, New York. He then studied at New York University and Adelphi University, which he left without a degree.

During the second half of the 1980s, Hannity made a living as a construction worker in Santa Barbara, California, and as a bartender.

Career as a radio and television presenter (since 1989)

Hannity began his radio career in 1989 as the host of a talk radio show on the college radio station KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara. The program, which he took over when he was still working as a construction worker, was discontinued after less than a year because the operators of the station were bothered by Hannity's derogatory and homophobic remarks to homosexual callers. Hannity said anyone who accepts homosexuality has been brainwashed . He countered a lesbian inclined woman with the admonition that he felt sorry for her child. Although Hannity's dismissal was later withdrawn by the broadcaster, Hannity decided not to return to KCSB.

Instead, he took a job at WVNN in Athens, Alabama, USA. In 1992 he switched to the station WGST in Atlanta. At the end of 1996 Hannity moved to New York, where he initially worked as a guest presenter for the broadcasting company WABC . Since 1997 Hannity has worked as a full-time presenter for the station, where he filled a late-night slot. In 1998 he was given a slot during commuter time.

Hannity's radio show has been broadcast through the syndication system of more than 500 radio stations across the United States since September 10, 2001. In 2004 Hannity signed a five-year contract worth 25 million dollars with ABC Radio (part of Citadel Communications since 2007 ), which provided for the continuation of his broadcast until 2009. In the spring of 2008, the program reached a rate of more than 13.25 million listeners per week.

In September 1996, Hannity was hired by Roger Ailes , the co-founder and broadcaster of the right-wing conservative news broadcaster Fox News , as a TV presenter for the station. Together with Alan Colmes , he was entrusted with the presentation of the show Hannity & Colmes , a weekday political discussion program in the station's evening program, which the two were to oversee for almost thirteen years until 2009. The concept of the program envisaged that a tandem of moderators, each composed of a representative of the two dominant political currents of the American political landscape ( conservatism and liberalism ), should deal with the political events of the day, discuss and analyze them. Hannity was naturally the advocate of right-wing positions, while Colmes argued in a liberal sense.

In addition, he presented the show Hannity's America alone on his station 's weekend program .

Since Colmes left in January 2009, Hannity has been single-handedly moderating the follow-up show Hannity , which will be broadcast on the old slot. Hannity's America was discontinued at the same time. Hannity made a name for himself early on as a particularly sharp critic of US President Barack Obama . In 2009 he had to admit that he had used misleading footage of large demonstrations in a report to make protests against the president's policies appear more impressive. Jon Stewart had pointed this out on his broadcast. Hannity was one of the first prominent supporters of Obama's successor Donald J. Trump , whose confidante he is and at whose campaign events he appeared.

In addition to the evening television show on Fox News , Hannity currently hosts a daily three hour talk radio show, the Sean Hannity Show . His radio show is the second most popular talk radio show in the United States after the Rush Limbaugh program . Alongside Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck , Hannity is now one of the most influential conservative opinion makers and opinion leaders in the media.

In addition to his work for television and radio, Hannity has also distinguished himself as an author of political opinion books. Two of his books made it onto the New York Times bestseller list ( Deliver Us from Evil and Conservative Victory ). According to his own statements, Hannity did not write most of his books due to the lack of time, but rather spoke them into a dictation machine on the daily drive to his radio show. In 2013, Hannity's audience ratings dropped so significantly that Fox News took away the important 9 p.m. airtime and gave it to Megyn Kelly .

Relationship with Donald Trump

Hannity was criticized by other conservatives, especially Ted Cruz 's supporters, in the 2016 election campaign for being partisan for Donald Trump and for giving him much more interview time. Hannity declined to respond to criticism of Trump and was often positive about his positions. Tensions arose again and again between Cruz and Hannity, which erupted in an interview in April 2016 with mutual accusations. According to Jim Rutenberg , Hannity is not only a fan of Trump, but also an advisor. Hannity replied: “I'm not hiding my sympathy for Donald Trump…. I never claimed to be a journalist. "

Hannity publicly engaged with other conservative media figures who opposed Trump (Never-Trumpers), including Jonah Goldberg , Bret Stephens and Rich Lowry . Hannity wrote to Bret Stephens on Twitter: "If Clinton wins, I'll hold assholes like you accountable."

On April 16, 2018, it was announced that Hannity was a client of Trump's longtime attorney and associate Michael Cohen . On April 9, Cohen's office and home were raided as part of an investigation into his business practices by the FBI . Hannity said he had mainly consulted on real estate matters but had not been represented by Cohen, received no invoice, and paid no legal fees. CNN.com saw a conflict of interest in Hannity, Politico pointed out that Hannity - without disclosing his connection to Cohen - had defended it several times on his TV show. Fox News announced that they knew nothing of Hannity's connection to Cohen, but that they fully support Hannity. The Guardian made research into Hannity's extensive real estate property public in April 2018. Hannity is said to have bought more than 870 homes for a total of about 90 million dollars over the past decade through front companies. After the mortgage crisis, he had acquired part of the real estate at foreclosures from 2013 onwards. Another part had been bought with help from the Department of Housing , which was helping Hannity through a program in raising millions of dollars in loans. Hannity did not reveal his personal connection to the ministry when he received the minister's minister, Ben Carson , as a guest in June 2017.

On the day before the mid-term election in November 2018 , Hannity stepped onto the stage at an election campaign event for President Trump after declaring hours earlier that he would only be there as a journalist.

Marriage and personal life

Catholic Hannity was married on January 9, 1993 to Jill Rhodes, a columnist for the Huntsville Times , with whom he has two children. At the beginning of June 2020 it was announced that Hannity and Rhodes had divorced in 2019.

Movie

Hannity's journalistic work is viewed very critically in the documentary Outfoxed . The film shows him as someone who lacks the principles of fairness towards his interlocutors and who violates the basic rules of decency.
