WBST is the main Indiana Public Radio station based in Muncie , Indiana . The transmitter transmits on VHF 92.1 MHz with 3 kW ERP. The suffix stands for the owner of the station B all ST ate, Ball State University . The station is a member of National Public Radio .

history

The history of Indiana Public Radio is closely linked to that of its first broadcaster, WBST .

WBST began broadcasting for the first time in 1951. Ball State received its first VHF license in 1960 and began broadcasting six hours a day with a 10-watt station. In 1961 a high transmission mast was erected near the WBST studios. In 1966, David Letterman became part of a 9-man news team that covered the primaries. In December 1978 WBST received a new 3 KW transmitter. In 1980, after more than 20 years of broadcasting, WBST became a member of National Public Radio. The station received more support from Ball State University and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

In 1997 the station expanded into a whole network of broadcasters and has been called Indiana Public Radio since 1998 .
