from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Indiana Public Radio is the public broadcaster of the US state Indiana . The main station is WBST in Muncie .

history

The history of Indiana Public Radio is closely linked to that of its first broadcaster, WBST . In 1923, two students from Indiana State Normal School, Eastern Division (now part of Ball State University ) built a "Radiophone" in a chamber of the Administration Building. Students could listen to radio stations from New York, Chicago and Dallas through a loudspeaker.

In 1951 the station WBST started a commercial program. In 1960, Ball State University received its first VHF license and broadcast six hours a day on a 10-watt station. In 1961 a high transmission mast was erected near the WBST studios. In 1966, David Letterman became part of a 9-man news team that covered the primaries. In December 1978 WBST received a new 3 KW transmitter. In 1980, after more than 20 years of broadcasting, WBST became a member of National Public Radio . The station received more support from Ball State University and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting .

In 1997 the station expanded: WBSB Anderson (UKW 89.5 MHz) and WBSW Marion (UKW 90.1 MHz) went on air with the IPR program. This was followed by WBSJ Portland (91.7 FM) and WBSH Hagerstown-New Castle (91.1 FM). This created a network of broadcasters. That is why WBST has been on the air as Indiana Public Radio since 1998 .
