The Svarttindane (Norwegian for black tips ) are a group of pointed mountain peaks including the Wesjolajaberg in Queen Maud Land in East Antarctica . They rise 3 km south of the Great Schwarzhorn in the southern Petermann chain of the Wohlthat massif .
Participants in the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher carried out an initial rough mapping based on aerial photographs. Participants in the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960), which also gave the formation its descriptive name, carried out a new mapping based on their own aerial photographs and measurements.
