The southern Petermann chain ( Norwegian Søre Petermannkjeda ) is a mountain range in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises over a length of 35 km in a northeast-southwest orientation from the Svarthausane to the Gneiskopf in the Wohlthat massif .
It was discovered during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . It is named after the German cartographer and geographer August Petermann (1822–1878). The naming was made by participants of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960).
