The Svarthausane ( Norwegian for black rocks ) are a group of cliffs in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . In the Wohlthatmassiv they form the northeastern end of the southern Petermann chain and are towered over by the Zhil'naya Mountain .
They were discovered and mapped during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . Participants of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960) carried out a new mapping based on their own measurements and with the help of aerial photographs and gave the formation its descriptive name.
