The Petermann Range are a group of contiguous mountain ranges in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . They rise up east of the Alexander von Humboldt Mountains in the central Wohlthat massif . These include the Eastern Petermann Chain , the Middle Petermann Chain , the Western Petermann Chain , the Southern Petermann Chain and the Pieckback .
They were discovered and named during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . It is named after the German cartographer and geographer August Petermann (1822–1878).
